Young Irish footballers are making quite a habit of having their skills shared around the world and the latest example has even turned the head of Peter Schmeichel.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, Peter Schmeichel certainly knows a thing or two about the art of guarding the net. He clearly didn’t achieve all he did without a lot of hard work so he will certainly appreciate 11-year-old Nathan Fanagan’s ability to make the most of a bad situation.
In self-isolation like most of the country, Nathan hasn’t let that stop him working on his goalkeeping game and this clip shared by his mother Sarah-Jayne Tobin is proof of that…
When you’re a goalkeeper… and an only child… in self isolation… and trying to keep up with your training… ??came up with this himself! I’m so impressed. #coronavirus #StayHomeStaySafe pic.twitter.com/FFzJ1LE3N1

Not only have Nathan’s innovative training methods captured the attention of regular Joe Soap on Twitter, but none other than former Manchester United goalkeeper and Champions League winner Peter Schmeichel has also added to the praise, saying ‘Nothing, not even an evil virus like the COVID-19 should stop a talented goalkeeper from working on getting better. Well done young man.’

As goalkeeping endorsements go, it doesn’t get more resounding than that. Nathan is just the latest Irish youngster to show off his skills on Twitter in recent days, with fellow Dubliner Cillian amazing thousands with his overhead kick skills. If you missed that clip, you can catch it here.
If this period of social distancing has taught us anything, it’s that the future of Irish soccer is in safe hands. Well done Nathan and Cillian.
