YouTuber Zoella Has Finally Responded To Advent Calendar Controversy

Megan Cassidy

It seemed YouTuber Zoella could do no wrong.

The lifestyle and beauty blogger has enjoyed enormous success in recent years, even releasing her own massively popular beauty range in Penneys.

Her latest product didn’t enjoy the same success, however, and now the 27-year-old has had to come forward to explain what went wrong.

Zoella 12 Days of Christmas Advent Calendar went on sale in Boots Ireland for €65, a price that many felt was extortionate considering what the calendar contained.

Having only 12 windows instead of 25, the calendar was filled with underwhelming products including a bag of glitter and a fluffy keyring, and was quickly deemed “disgustingly overpriced”.

Now, Zoella has revealed that she has nothing to do with pricing.

In a vlog titled Christmas Adverts & How We Met, the 27-year-old said: ‘There has been upset, disappointed people in the Zoella Lifestyle advent calendar… more specifically, the price of the calendar. And I didn’t want to not address it because I want you guys to know I do care about how you feel about things, and the last thing I want to do is anger, upset or disappoint anyone, because that is not my intention in the slightest. ‘The calendar is something I’ve worked on for a year.

“I love the product, I’m all about the creativity, I’m all about getting it from a design to a product. Where my input ends is there. Once that product is done and I am happy with it, the retailer can decide how much they sell that for, that’s completely out of my decision making.

“I don’t have the right to make those decisions. So it makes me so sad that a product that I loved and worked hard on, and loads of you liked the product, it’s just having that product at that price that was out of my decision, has left so many people so upset.”

She went on:

“I feel so let down by this also, and the price of any product is up to a retailer. I know that there are some of you who might not have known that.

“I don’t want people to think I’m sat at home, like, counting fifty pounds every time someone buys this calendar and thinking that was a conscious decision I made to rip people off.

“Because if you know me, you know that there’s not a bone in my body that would think that way. And it makes me so sad that anyone would think that was my intention, because that is 100% not my intention.”
