‘It’s best to slow down a bit’ West Cork family-run sambo shop to close

Katy Thornton

After nearly a year in business, Ron D’s is taking a well deserved break.

Ron D’s grilled sandwich shop opened just under a year ago at The Ballydehob Community Hall in West Cork. They open every Wednesday from 12:30pm, doing a range of toasties, along with some sweet treats including donuts, cookies, and pies. The business is owned by partners Simon and Liz; Simon’s passion was making sourdough bread which he uses to create their amazing grilled sambos.

Unfortunately for locals, Ron D’s will cease trading on Wednesday, 23rd March 2022.

They took to Instagram to announce the news:

After almost a year of being open every Wednesday we have decided that for our small family it’s best to slow down a bit. Even though it’s one day, there’s ALOT of work that goes into it and If you’re a Sourdough Bread Baker then you know what I’m talking about.”

Don’t get the tissues out yet though. While the family takes a small break from the sambo making business, Ron D’s will hopefully make a few pop-up appearances as we head into the summer. More exciting yet, the Instagram post confirmed, “we’re still on the lookout for a Ron D’s permanent spot“. So we haven’t seen the last of their tasty toasties.

In the meantime, make sure you get down to Ron D’s in the next two weeks before they shut up shop for a while.
