Gone are the days when our beloved prosecco was saved for special occasions.
Now it's the go-to drink for many, helped in no small part by the budget bottles of bubbly that are now widely available, meaning we no longer have to fork out big bucks for a glass of fizz.
One area it's not worth scrimping on, however, is our glassware - as experts have revealed that drinking prosecco or champagne from plastic cups has a drastic effect on its flavour.
A study, conducted by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, found that bubbles behave very differently depending on their vessel.
Because the bubbles play a massive part in the taste, consuming sparkling wine from any container other than glass alters the taste dramatically.
Andrea Sella, professor of inorganic chemistry at University College London, told the publication:
“Using plastic glasses, for example, really isn’t so good because the bubbles actually stick quite strongly to the walls of the glass [and so are] bigger before they lift off."
Bubbles in more expensive sparkling wines are actually smaller - so the bigger the bubble, the worse the taste.
But, at the end of the day, if it's a choice between plastic prosecco or no prosecco, we know what we'll be choosing.
