A 65-year-old Irish woman has died after falling 200 feet while hiking in the Alps.

According to the Irish Independent, the incident happened in the Austrian section of the mountain range, on the Stubaier Hohenweg route in Gschnitz.

The woman had been traveling with an English companion and a German tour group. She died at around 10.35am local time on Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for the Tyrol state police department said:

“As her English companion was travelling at a faster pace, the Irishwoman joined a five person German group, and she accompanied this group at a distance.”
