Alpaca trekking at this lodge in Kenmare is the perfect weekend activity

Sarah Finnan

Few things can bring as much joy as a smiling alpaca.

Take one look at that face and you’re bound to be smiling too. Happiness is contagious.

Meet Cappuccino, Cusco and Jersey below.

Now imagine getting to spend a whole two hours of quality time with some of Kenmare’s fluffiest residents.

The Naked Sheep Lodge allows you to do just that.

Offering guests the chance to go alpaca trekking, you can take “the boys” out for a wander through the wild Kerry countryside.

I have never wanted to do something more.

Starting off at the alpaca’s barn, organisers Mia and Simon put on head collars and leads (on the animals, not themselves) and rhyme off a brief health and safety chat before heading the group out into the forest behind their land.

Describing it as “a magical place and virtually untouched with emerald green moss and clovers”, it sounds like the dreamiest setting for the dreamiest daytime activity.

Pack snacks for the halfway stop and don’t forget your camera because you’re definitely going to want to take some snaps…for memories and for the ‘gram too of course.

Costing just €25, I’d hanker a guess that it will be the best money you ever spend.

And if two hours isn’t enough bonding time for you, you can even stay at the Alpaca Lodge.

A free-standing stone building right beside the farmhouse, the B&B is kitted out with a king-size bed, a breakfast nook and an en suite.

Continental breakfast delivered straight to your door every morning. I don’t think this place can get much better…except that it’s surrounded by alpacas and you can visit them whenever you want.

Book your stay here. Bet I get there first.
