Cavan up there with Paris and Rome as it’s revealed to be Ireland’s most romantic county

Katy Thornton

You know exactly where to be heading if you want to be swept off your feet so.

If you’ve ever wondered where the capital county of love is in Ireland, wonder no more. The best place for romance is County Cavan, a Bank of Ireland study has found.

For Valentine’s Day 2023, Cavan consumers spent 126% more on the special people in their lives. They spent significantly more than other counties, with the next top-spending county being revealed as Offaly (+49%), then Wicklow (+38%). Roscommon and Sligo were next, spending 29% more on Valentine’s Day than normal.

The least romantic counties, at least the ones that spent less than normal in Ireland, were Kilkenny (-12%), Kerry (-18%), Kildare (-19%), and Leitrim. Waterford is Cavan’s antithesis, reigning as Ireland’s least romantic county, with Valentine’s Day spending declining by 35%.

Overall there was more Valentine’s Day spending this year than previously, with spending hikes in all the classic areas like spas (+62%), grooming (+58%), jewellery (+47%), chocolates (+46%), greeting cards (+31%), and hotel breaks (+15%). Men splashed the cash on flowers more than women did, but it was 50/50 when it came to buying chocolates. They spent an equal amount more or less on perfume, but men spent more on jewellery (66%) than women did (34%).

You know where to be heading for Valentine’s Day 2024 if you really want to be treated.
