A Dundalk supermarket will open for elderly people only for an hour each day in the hope of limiting the contact between old and young.
SuperValu Fairways in Dundalk has announced that they will open from 7am to 8am for the elderly only during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
With the elderly believed to be the most at risk with Covid-19, SuperValu Fairways want to give older people the opportunity to shop without the worry of being infected by younger carriers of the virus.
Managers at the shop have requested that the wider public respect their decision to provide such an opportunity to the elderly during this hour, with the initiative coming into effect on March 18.
A statement on the store’s official Facebook page reads: “Here at Supervalu Fairways Dundalk we will be opening our store between 7-8am for the elderly commencing Wednesday 18th March. Could the wider public please respect this hour and understand that this time is allocated for elderly people. this includes people who have mobilities issues ie wheelchairs walking aids.”
On Sunday evening, the Government asked all pubs (including hotel bars) to close for two weeks in the hope of enforcing more stringent social distancing measures.
40 additional cases of coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland were confirmed in the latest update, bringing the total in this country to 169.
