Facebook’s new name is here – did you guess it right?

Fiona Frawley

If they actually manage to get everyone to stop referring to it as Facebook, I’ll be pretty impressed.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s new name at the company’s Connect event yesterday. Final chance to guess it before the big reveal:

Sorry about that. Distraction tactics.

Anyway. Facebook is set to rebrand itself as Meta. According to The Verge, Zuckerberg said at the company event yesterday:

We are a company that builds technology to connect… Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.

He added that the name Meta may not strictly reflect exactly what the company does now, “But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.”

According to The Verge, Zuckerberg owns the Twitter handle @meta and the domain meta.com, which currently redirects to a Facebook website page outlining the imminent changes. The site had previously redirected to to meta.org, a biomedical research discovery tool that was a project of the Chan Zuckerberg Science Initiative. This initiative was co-founded by Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, who is a physician, in 2015. Currently, the webpage states that it will “sunset” in March 2022.

In the meantime, here’s a video of Mark Zuckerberg explaining how we’ll all be turned into sims. Enjoy.
