Seven Irish Women Leading The Way For The Sustainable Fashion Movement

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

The word influencer often evokes images of a leggy blonde laced in fake tan laughing at her coffee but lately, there have been a few individuals using their social following for more than a quick-hitting ego boost.

There has been a huge sustainable fashion movement in the Irish Instagram community as of late. Thrifting is cool again, wearing that 10-year-old t-shirt is trendy and people are becoming more conscious about the environmental impact of their spending habits.

My best friend and I walked past a huge Boohoo billboard the other day and she turned to me and said: “it’s crazy how much I hate these companies now, I’ll probably never buy from them again”. Whoever said social influencers have no power are wrong.

It’s so refreshing to see people using their platforms to promote sustainability and educate people about their carbon footprints and how it’s affecting the planet. It’s exactly what an influencer should be using their platform for.

Here are some boss-ass bishes who are going to change your mind about fast-fashion:

1. Keelin Moncrieff

Keelin’s following is growing rapidly for her rawness, realness, bluntness and unique style. She says it how it is, it’s very evident that she knows her stuff too.

She defines herself as an :

Anti-Blogger Blogger

She’s gas and she really has been a trail-blazer for this movement. It’s clear that after her account gained traction, many others have followed her good example and are now promoting sustainable fashion on their own profiles as a result.

2. Molly Parsons

Molly hosts a podcast called Molly’s Minutes (well worth a listen) and can often be seen promoting sustainable fashion on her profiles.

She has a quirky style and some really interesting opinions.

3. Taz Kelleher

Taz radiates happiness and has one of the most aesthetically GORJ Insta feeds around.

She’s one half of Sustainable Fashion Dublin, a great organisation that hosts a wide range of environmentally-friendly events such as thrift shop crawls, swap shops, alteration classes and sustainability talks.

4. Geraldine Carton

The other half of Sustainable Fashion Dublin, Geraldine Carton defines herself as a:

“Pun enthusiast, podcast junkie & a big fan of colourful leggings.”

The charity shop crawls are filled with positivity, fun and of course, they support charities – it’s a win-win.

5. Jill & Gill

Jill & Gill are probably one of my favourite Irish designer duos right now.

Jill and Gill paired up back in 2016 after collaborating on a print commission together. Since then they’ve worked on projects for James Vincent McMorrow, Currabinny, Smirnoff, Repeal project, Jameson and Brown Thomas.

Their garments are really well made and ethically sourced. They have been created under the brand’s ethos to be fashion conscious and timeless.

6. Sarah Hanrahan

Sarah is more on the blogger side of things but she incorporates vintage and thrift store pieces into her outfits as much as possible.

She most recently posted an IGTV video called “Come Thrifting With Me” showing how and where she picks up her unique pieces.

She’s a very cool gal with equally as cool style.

7. Elaine – Wandering Irish Cailín

Elaine is an Irish explorer, minimalist and sustainable nut.

She’s also a dote.

I predict big things for these ladies.
