Irish airport named most scenic in the world for the third year running

James Fenton

Donegal Airport has been named the most scenic airport in the world for the third consecutive year.

The annual Scenic Airports poll conducted by PrivateFly has taken place and it has led to Donegal Airport being crowned top of the world for the third year in a row. Located in the townland of Carrickfinn, the airport is nestled amid a beautiful, untouched landscape and the above picture would almost have you booking a flight for the landing view alone.

Donegal Airport fought off competition from Msembe Airstrip in Tanzania which finished in second place and Skiathos (Alexandros Papadiamantis) Airport in Greece, which finished third.

Over 6,000 frequent flyers and airplane enthusiasts took part in the poll, with voting taking place in February and March. Now that we’re all used to travel restrictions brought on by Covid-19, dreaming about landing in some of these gorgeous spots is just about all we can do for now.

Given its success over the past three years, you wouldn’t bet against Donegal Airport holding onto its crown for a fourth year. Congrats to all involved!
