The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has published the list of the most popular baby names in Ireland in 2019.
Topping the respective boy and girl lists last year were Jack and Emily.
The CSO has been publishing a list of the most popular names in Ireland each year since 1998 and it receives this data from the General Registration Office (GRO).
Last year, the CSO found that the most popular boys’ names in Ireland were Jack, James, Noah, Conor and Daniel while the most popular names for girls were Emily, Grace, Fiadh, Sophie and Hannah.
It is the 16th time that Jack has come out on top for boys’ names while Emily has been the most popular name for a girl for nine years running.
Commenting on the trends in Irish baby names, Carol Anne Hennessy, Statistician said: “Emily retains the top spot for girls, followed by Grace, Fiadh, Sophie and Hannah. These were the top five names of choice by parents for their newly arrived baby girls in 2019.
“Jack has retained the top spot as the most popular baby boys name in 2019, a position it has held since 2007 except for 2016, when James was the most popular choice. Jack was followed by James, Noah, Conor and Daniel as the first five most popular names for boys in 2019.”
