New rules on the sale of alcohol in Irish supermarkets are now in place

James Fenton

New rules on the sale of alcohol in supermarkets came into place today, with outlets now requested to separate alcohol products from the rest of the store.

Under Section 22 of the Public Health Alcohol Act, 2018, mixed sale shops must place a barrier of at least 1.2 metres in height at the entrance of the alcohol section of their store. The new rules apply to all mixed trade retailers such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and petrol stations selling alcohol.

Under the provision, ‘advertisements for alcohol products and the exposure for sale of alcohol products shall be in a single area of the premises which is separated from the rest of the premises by means of a physical barrier.’

One major aim of the legislation is to reduce the attractiveness of alcohol to children and young people. The requirements of Section 22 do not apply to stand alone off-licences.
