Irish professionals living out their dream career is a rare phenomenon, unfortunately.

In a study done by Allianz Insurance and The Journal, it was shown that only 30% of Irish people are in their dream job.

Over 10% of people reported that they wanted to be a teacher when they grew up. 8.3% wanted to be a nurse, and 4.7% wanted to be a Guard.

The study showed that 9.7% of respondents were “sort of” working in their dream role; just 8.8% confirmed they were working in their dream job. 70% of Irish people simply responded no to the question of whether they were working their dream job or not.

1 in 10 respondents stated they were working in their childhood dream job; of these, 16.6% of respondents fell into the teaching profession, with nurses and farmers taking second and third place with 5.7% and 5.6% of respondents working in these roles respectively.

According to the study, 10.5% of parents said their child wanted to be a vet when they grew up. Being a teacher took a close second for children today at 8.3%, followed by a farmer (7.6%), a YouTuber (5.1%), and a footballer (4.9%).

Speaking about the survey results, Head of Marketing at Allianz Insurance, Mark Brennan, said:

It’s certainly interesting to see how some jobs remain as popular as ever and what has changed. But for those who have not pursued their childhood dream and it’s still alive then we would say it’s never too late to rewrite your own story!

Well there you have it. Are you in your dream job?
