A kind word can go a long way.
Only a matter of days into our second lockdown of the year, news that the country would be reverting back to level five restrictions hit people hard. Having a knock-on effect on all aspects of life, the more stringent measures have also meant that visits to long term residential care facilities have been suspended for the time being.
Well aware that the situation can take its toll on a person’s mental health, one Kildare business owner decided to try lighten the load a little, setting up the Pen Pal Project to connect volunteers with care home residents across Ireland.
Knowing that a kind word can go a long way, the idea is to encourage people to send letters to nursing home residents as a way to brighten their day and show them that there are people thinking of them. Putting a call out for volunteers on the project’s newly-launched Instagram page, organiser Stacey has been inundated with support and is now encouraging people to reach out to local care homes in their areas to see if they would like to get involved.
