The ‘tiny house’ movement has been steadily growing in popularity in recent years, with countless people choosing to make the move to a more unique and sustainable way of living.
It’s been getting more attention than ever lately, thanks in no small part to the hit US-based Netflix show Tiny House Nation and the countless Instagram accounts dedicated to the trend – as well as the fact that owning a home seems out of reach for so many these days.
And now, a Cork-based company called Big Man Tiny Homes is following suit and offering people the opportunity to build their own tiny home for a fraction of the price of a standard house.
Founded by Cork builder JP Simpson, who has lived in a tiny home for more than 15 years, he believes smaller, smarter homes could be the answer to the current housing crisis and is launching his new business, Big Man Tiny Homes in response to the demand.
A typical tiny house is 450 to 480sq ft in size, costs between €45,000 and €80,000 plus VAT, and comes complete with a fitted bathroom and kitchen, open plan living room, and one to two bedrooms.
The mini houses are available to purchase in turn-key condition, are quick to build with sustainable materials, taking just six to eight weeks, and they are delivered by crane onto your site.
All the houses are A-rated, with double glazing and LED lighting, so units require up to 50% less energy to run, making utility bills nominal. Each tiny home is customised in design, although you can also choose from some standard models on their website. And if you want to be able to relocate in the future, they are built on a chassis, so they can be moved.
JP says, “People now want more freedom in their lives, and they don’t want to be tied down to massive debts. Living big lives in small spaces is one way of making these dreams a reality.”
If you’re curious about owning your own tiny home or just want to have a nose around inside one of them, a Big Man Tiny Homes showcase will be taking place in Kinsale, Co. Cork this weekend.
The showcase will be held on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July from 12pm to 6pm at the Old Head of Kinsale, where you’ll be able to see a home up close and personal and get advice from various experts, including an in-house architectural consultant and an engineer.
