The Irish accent has officially been voted the sexiest

Katy Thornton

Tell us something we don’t know.

We’ve had our suspicions for some time now, but it now appears to be official – the Irish accent is one of the sexiest in the world.

That’s according to a study by Best Casinos, which surveyed UK respondents on the accents they find most and least attractive, and perhaps to no one’s surprise, the Irish accent comes out on top.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. How could anyone possibly pinpoint the Irish accent when our country is home to so many charming but vastly different ones? Are these people referring to a soft Galwegian accent, or a characteristic inner-city Dublin one? Perhaps they’re charmed by the Donegal accent, or maybe they’ve been seduced by a Kerryman? There’s no way to truly know which accent they’re referring to, but sure look, with over half of the participants (53%) saying that they like the Irish accent best, we’ll take it.

Indeed, the Irish accent was voted as the favourite among both male and female respondents, and ranked as the sexiest and most trust-worthy. What’s more, it also has the honour of being the accent that was “most likely to make someone believe a person is more intelligent”.

The survey also gauged the accents that folks from the UK find the least attractive, and they are: Welsh, German, Scottish, American and Australian.

Irish accents have a long history of performing pretty well in these kinds of surveys. Just last year, a study by Coffee Friend determined that the Dublin accent was the most loved accent out of the entire UK and Ireland. The second most attractive, according to this study, was Edinburgh, with Queen’s English and Welsh coming in joint third.

Belfast accents were voted the fourth most attractive, with 44% of people loving a good Northern Irish tone.
