Going on a trip to Norn Iron? You might need a cheat sheet to get all the lingo.
Planning a trip to Belfast but don’t speak the language? Yes you may be thinking, but they speak English, I’ll be fine. And while that is true, they have a very niche way of speaking English that can be tricky at the best of times. Luckily the 1852 Hotel in Belfast are there to help you out with all their quirky sayings. With these handy phrases under you belt, you’ll be speaking like a Belfastian in no time.

While you may be familiar with some of these slang words (wee, aye, and arse being somewhat self-explanatory), there’s some wildcards in there. “Ats us nai” means “Now we are ready” while “Buck Eejit” is a great way of calling someone an “idiot”. Being originally from the North myself, with a very Northern father, I had the pleasure of knowing many of these phrases already, although “kex” meaning “underwear” and “peelers” meaning “police” are definitely new to me.
With a translation sheet like this, sure you’ll have no problem on your trip.
