A Fungie mural was unveiled at the dolphin’s memorial service

And now we’re crying…. again.

Fungie was a national treasure. He was much loved by the Irish people, particularly those local to Dingle, where he spent 37 years of his life. Yesterday, a year after Fungie went missing, a memorial was held for him. The below TikTok video gives us a brief snippet of the memorial where a local priest can be seen giving a service at sea.

For those who couldn’t attend, Twitter proved to document it well. Murphy’s ice cream gave out freebies while locals played trad music for the crowds that gathered. People went on free boat rides that once journeyed to see Fungie, seeing something different instead. The Dingle Peninsula Tourism Twitter page posted photos of the mural that was painted to honour Fungie. It adorns the side of an old lighthouse and was unveiled during the memorial. Now Fungie continues to look out on the ocean he lived in for so many years.

We won’t ever know for certain what happened to Fungie, but if the turnout is anything to go by, it’s safe to say he was loved greatly and will be sorely missed. Gone, but never forgotten.
