A rare blue moon will be visible across Ireland tomorrow night

Sarah Finnan

You’ve heard of the phrase “once in a blue moon”? Well, this is where the saying comes from.

Irish people are in for a real treat tomorrow night as the sky will be lit up by a rare blue moon this Halloween. The first full moon to coincide with October 31st in over 40 years, this one will be extra spooky as it’s also the second full moon to fall this month.

Known as a blue moon, the name is given to the second full moon to fall in any one calendar month. Timing its arrival with Halloween – the spookiest night of the year – it’s extremely rare that the two overlap and Ireland won’t see the likes happen again for another 20 years so you’re not going to want to miss this.

Urging everyone to step outside to get a look, Astronomy Ireland has described it as “an extremely rare event”, also encouraging people to snap a picture if they can.

Expected to be visible in Irish skies from around 3pm tomorrow, there’s no telling what else you might see – UFOs, broomsticks, flying Ford Anglias… all fair game. Anything can happen on Halloween, you know.
