A teenage boy drowned yesterday evening after getting into trouble while swimming at a harbour on the River Shannon.

17-year-old Damola Adetosoye got into difficulty after jumping into the water at Tarmon Harbour in Tarmonbarry near the Roscommon-Longford border.

It is understood that friends threw a life ring to Damola in an effort to rescue him and then entered the water to try and help.

The alarm was raised and locals rushed to launch a rescue operation. The teenager's body was pulled from the water a short time later, according to Independent.ie, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
