A ‘variety of new measures’ to be announced by Cabinet tomorrow

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has said that a ‘variety of measures’ will be announced by Cabinet tomorrow.

Current Level 3 measures had been expected to remain in place until January 6, however a recent spike in Covid-19 cases means that that date is likely to be brought forward. Last night, a 48-hour travel ban was imposed on people planning to travel from Britain and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan told those who have been socialising recently to “consider changing their Christmas plans”.

Today, Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney told Claire Byrne on RTÉ Radio One that it is likely that restrictions on inter-county travel that eased last Friday will be put in place earlier than the the planned January 6 date. When asked about the possibility, he said that “I think it may do. We will do as we always do and make decisions with the facts in front of us to protect people and keep them safe this Christmas. We may need to introduce further restrictions before January 6.”

Meanwhile, over on Newstalk, Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said that “It is likely there will be further restrictions. Sooner than was originally planned. In a variety of measures there is likely to be change.”

The Government is expected to make an announcement on any new changes on Tuesday.
