AA Roadwatch report of “impassable” roads due to heavy icy conditions

Rory Cashin

Icy conditions have been reported on roads in twelve counties around the country.

With the arrival of Wednesday morning, more than half the country is coming out of a status yellow ice warning, with Met Eireann stating that last night was very cold indeed, “with temperatures falling to between -2 and -5 degrees, possibly colder locally, with a widespread severe frost. Icy patches may form on untreated surfaces. Freezing temperatures will persist well into the day on Wednesday.”

Those icy patches have taken hold overnight and well into this morning, with the AA Roadwatch issuing warnings to several counties around the country, informing drivers that their trips this morning maybe be more treacherous than usual.

In Wicklow, the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap are both impassable due to icy road conditions, and drivers are told to use alternative routes.

Elswhere, AA Roadwatch have warned that “Icy conditions have been reported this morning around parts of Galway, Longford, Roscommon, Cavan especially on secondary roads in Bailieborough, Kildare, Carlow and Tipperary. In Offaly, local and secondary routes in Birr are very icy. Frosty conditions have also been reported around parts of Leitrim, Mayo and Monaghan with icy secondary roads in Carrickmacross.”

Their advice if you have to drive in this areas is to slow down and keep well back from other road users, as well as sticking to main routes where possible as they are more likely to have been gritted.

More cold weather is expected for the majority of the week, so we’d imagine these warnings will become a regular occurance for the next while. Be sure to check in on the AA Roadwatch Newsroom page if you do plan on driving on some of the colder, icier morning.
