When commuting, it's almost a necessity to be on your phone.

If you look around you, just about everyone is glued to their screens.

However, Irish Rail has warned that being glued to your smartphone could be more dangerous than you think.

The company's new report has revealed there has been a significant increase in trips, falls and slips accidents and it could be down to passengers being distracted with their phones.

The number of incidents has increased by almost a third, rising from 202 in 2015 to 261 last year - with a third of these incidents involving the gap between the train and the platform.

While most of mishaps were minor and involved slips, trips and falls, passenger behaviour "including the increased use of smartphones in inappropriate situations"has been flagged as one of the main contributing factors.

Are you guilty of looking at your phone and not being fully aware of your surroundings?
