Tributes are being paid to a young Wicklow soccer player who has passed away in Bray yesterday.

12-year-old Aaron O’Kelly played in goal for the Bray Ardmore Rovers club and fell suddenly ill at home on Saturday, The Irish Times reports.

He was taken to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin where he was later pronounced dead. Gardai are treating his death as a tragedy.

Ardmore Rovers Club has posted a heartbreaking statement, saying that Aaron ” epitomised the spirit of the club”.

They added that he was a “friendly figure in his team” and had helped his Under 12s team win in a recent league as well as picking up Player of the Year award.

His father, Paul, managed the football team for several years and the club stated that “Ardmore Rovers and all its members would like to send condolences to the O’Kelly family at this very sad time.”
