It has been revealed today that the State will fork out a massive €548,000 on prisoner’s clothing over the next three years.
The high figure is particularly surprising as the majority of prisons in Ireland allow prisoners to wear their own clothing for the sake of “cleanliness, warmth and health”.
This shipment will include underwear, socks, dressing gowns, polo shirts, white vests, runners and tracksuits for a total of 4,212 prisoners who are within the Irish Prison Service.
The batch will be distributed to Limerick Prison, Portlaoise, Cloverhill, Mountjoy, The Dochas Centre, Arbour Hill and Shelton Abbey.
