The Government has been urged to excavate 180 sites of ‘mother and baby homes’ across the country.

The appeal comes in the wake of the discovery of human remains belonging to up to 800 children at the site of a former industrial home in Tuam last week.

According to The Irish Times, the Justice For Magdalenes group has now called on the State to commit to a widespread investigation into similar sites in Ireland to ascertain whether there are further remains to be found.

A spokesperson said that those who died while living in these homes deserve to be identified and to have their final resting place marked.
