The Average Cost Of Abortion In Ireland Has Been Revealed

Darragh Berry

Even though only a couple of days have passed since the referendum was passed, the process to put the repeal into action has already began.

The Irish Independent is reporting that according to medical sources, the cost of an abortion in Ireland will be in the region of €300.

Abortion pills – which will be used in most terminations – come under a new drugs payment scheme which has a limit of €134 for approved prescribed drugs and medicines.

The abortion process in Ireland will require at least two GP visits. After the first visit, patients will have a 72-hour ‘consideration’ period before their second consultation.

The first consultation will be around €100.

The drug is then dispensed in the second consultation, the appointment costs €80.

Between 1980 and 2016, over 168,000 girls and women have accessed UK abortion and provided Irish addresses.

The most recent year of statistics shows that 3,265 women and girls have Irish addresses at UK abortion services in 2016.

This number is an underestimation, as not all women will provide their Irish addresses at UK abortion clinics.

A 2016 report also shows that 1,642 abortion pill packages were sent to Ireland in the 3 year period 2010 to 2012.
