PICS: Derry Girls Star Calls Out Reviewer Who Analysed “Her Body” Twice In Separate Reviews

Darragh Berry

Our Thursday nights have just not been the same since Derry Girls finished up. We knew it was only going to be six, short episodes but we hadn’t come across humour like it in years and we weren’t ready for it to end, albeit until the next season.

If you haven’t seen it, are you actually having a laugh? You missed out on the funniest Irish sitcom since Father Ted and we mean that.

It follows the lives of Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and Michelle’s English cousin, James, as they grow up in Derry in the mid-90s.

Nicola Coughlan plays the role of Clare. Clare is a worrier, if the group are up to something, Clare is always going to be the voice of reason stating why it’s such a bad idea.

There’s no denying that Coughlan is a fantastic actress but it’s her body image that has been under the spotlight in her latest performance.

The actress took to Twitter to share her disappointment about a certain review in the British Theatre Guide where the reviewer in question said that Nicola’s character was the “overweight girl who will always be the butt of her fellows’ immature humuor”.

It’s not the first time this reviewer has mentioned her weight when reviewing her performances either, Nicola stated that:

“I was in a show called Jess and Joe Forever last August which he came to see and his opening sentence was ‘Jess is a fat girl’

“My weight has no relevance to either the performance I gave in that or in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”

Nicola concluded by addressing the British Theatre Guide again and said that:

“I am so disappointed you let a man like this review for you.

“Let me state this clearly, he is not welcome to review any show I am in from now till forever. And I plan to be in a lot of damn shows. Peace.”
