10 Classic Gifts To Get Your Significant Other For Valentine’s Day

Liz

Valentine’s is not a traditional gift-giving holiday.

Unlike birthdays and Christmas, the aim isn’t to get your partner something they’d like and use all the time. Valentine’s is the time to be completely impractical and romantic.

You should get a gift that will impress on your significant other how much you care about them and want to make them happy, like…

1. Something romantic

You can’t go wrong with a present that shows you care. These include a photo album of you two, a giftbox of their favourite things, a memento from a place you visited together, anything that makes it clear that you’re mad about them.

2. An experience

Give your significant other something to look forward to and get them an experience. Buy them a voucher for something the two of you can enjoy together, whether that is a food tour, wine-tasting or a weekend away.

3. Flowers

Yes, it’s a huge cliché. But flowers have become cliché for a reason, and girls almost never get them in real life.

For guys, maybe get them a cactus, which I’m reliably told is the ‘manliest plant’.

4. Chocolate

But instead of just buying them a box, why not bring them to a fancy chocolate shop like Cocoa Atlier, Coco Bó or Butlers and get them to pick out the chocolates they like?

Or go even fancier and get them macaroons.

5. A home-cooked meal with all the trimmings

We’re talking about surprising them by cleaning up, lighting all the candles, opening the Prosecco and cooking their all-time favourite food.

Alternatively, if the weather is good, why not move outside and make it a picnic?

6. Jewellery

This is probably limited to couples with more disposable cash. But the basic idea is that every time they look down and see their watch/bracelet/ring, they’ll think of you.

7. Underwear

You’re basically saying ‘I’d like to see you mostly naked wearing this’. This obviously does not apply to buying a five-pack of pants.

8. A funny gift

Whether that’s an ironic card, a cheesy teddy bear or even dinosaur slippers. Perfect for couples who have only just started seeing each other.

9. Aftershave or perfume

Another classic. Alternatively, get them something like fancy soap or bath salts, the kind they wouldn’t normally get for themselves because it would seem like an extravagance.

10. A subscription

There’s nothing nicer than getting a little surprise in the post every month. You can sign up to one of the many gift subscription services, like beauty supplies for both men and women from Birchbox and Look Fantastic, collectibles from Loot Crate, craft beers from The Beer Club, socks from Sock Fancy and Sock Panda, or stationery from Paper Gang.
