Gardaí investigation underway after ‘Bag of sh.t’ is thrown at Government TDs

Fiona Frawley

Minister of State for Disability Anne Rabbitte and Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon have said that bags containing excrement “(human or animal, yet unknown)” were thrown at them during a meeting.

Both TDs have tweeted about the incident, which occurred yesterday evening. Anne Rabbitte shared details just after 8.20pm, writing:

Attended a meeting tonight and a bag of sh.t thrown a me and my government colleague !!!

Ciaran Cannon said:

So an idiot goes to the bother of putting excrement (human or animal, yet unknown) into two bags and throws one at me and one at Anne. All part of the job you might say, but I can understand why fewer people want this job. #politics

A statement was also released by An Garda Síochána last night, who are currently investigating the incident. They have said they are “investigating all the circumstances relating to an incident that occurred at a public meeting in Gort this evening, Wednesday 4th January, 2023″.

A number of politicians and public figures have spoken out in support of Anne and Ciaran after the incident. TD Cathal Crowe called it “a horrible and disgusting act”, while former Mayor of Dublin and Green Party Councillor Hazel Chu said: “If you disagree with a public representative’s policy by all means protest them. But assault cannot and should not be tolerated. It was a disgusting act of cowardice”.
