Gardaí investigation underway after illegal ‘shebeen’ found in Kildare

Gardaí have launched an official investigation after an illegal shebeen was discovered at a premises in Athy, Co Kildare.

Learning of the shebeen via social media, Gardaí obtained a warrant to search the building discovering a “fully operational premises” complete with a bar, beer taps, a 70-inch flat-screen TV and a full-size pool table.

Sharing several photos from the search, the Gardaí have appealed to the public to comply with public health guidelines and regulations to save lives.

“Gardaí searched under warrant a suspected Shebeen premises operating near Athy, County Kildare, last night.

A fully operational premises fitted with a bar, stools, tables, beer taps, chairs, toilet, 70-inch flat screen television, and a full-size pool table, was located.

Gardaí seized five kegs of beer, a significant amount of spirits and bottled beers, and various bar equipment (taps, gas and coolers).

An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all citizens to comply with Public Health Guidelines and Regulations in order to continue to save lives.

A full investigation is now underway.”

Part of Operation Navigation, Gardaí have been investigating the running of shebeens around the country in an effort to clamp down on illegal indoor gatherings. Venues in Laois, Westmeath and Meath that were suspected to be in breach of liquor licencing legislation were also searched under warrant earlier this month with authorities confirming that “substantial quantities of alcohol” were seized along with beer taps, coolers, kegs, spirit dispensers and other barware.
