Gardaí have warned people to be vigilant after a new scam that seems to target elderly people meant that one woman was conned out of €850.
The Galway Independent reports that last week an elderly woman was contacted by a foreign woman claiming to be from the “anti fraud Visa Department”.
She told the elderly woman that a sum of money had been removed from her account and for it to be refunded she would have to transfer money to make up the balance as Western Union could only transfer larger amounts.
The caller stayed on the phone while the woman transferred the cash and told her not to tell anyone.
“Please be aware of these type of scams, and highlight the issue to family and friends, in particular the elderly in the community,” said a garda spokesperson.
Anyone with any information on this scam is urged to contact their local garda station.
