Gardaí have questioned a youth in relation to a social media post which referred to him carrying out a school shooting, the Irish Independent reports.

The boy, a secondary school student from the east of the country, reportedly made the post on Instagram before the alarm was raised. Gardaí visited the boy's home and were told that the post was made 'as a joke'.

He was warned about the serious of of the situation and his parents have also been made aware. The post has since been removed.

Last week, 10 people were killed in a high school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas.
