Car owners who give their vehicle to an unaccompanied learner driver could face prosecution under new laws being brought to cabinet today.

Minister for Transport Shane Ross will also seek to give gardai the power to seize vehicles on the spot if a learner is driving alone.

Other possible penalties include a €2,000 fine or six months in prison, The Irish Independent reports.

The Minister has decided to bring in the new laws following a campaign by a Cork man who lost his wife and daughter in a crash two years ago.

As it stands, unaccompanied learner drivers are slapped with two penalty points and a fixed fine.
