The HSE has confirmed that 55 people have died from flu in Ireland so far this winter. The majority were over the age of 65 while less than 10 were children.

HSE Director of Public Health, Dr John Cuddihy said that the flu season will last for "a further nine to 10 weeks before it completely disappears".

Nearly 320 people were hospitalised with influenza last week and Dr. Cuddihy believes that this week may be the peak of the outbreak.

“The flu is still at high levels. It may have peaked this week.

“We will know more when we see next week’s data to look at the weeks together to see what the trend is.

“But it is likely that we will see flu circulating in the community for another nine or ten weeks.”
