Ireland Hosting The Olympics Is A ‘Realistic Prospect’ According To Minister

James Fenton

Sports Minister Shane Ross has said the “sky is the limit” if Ireland’s bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup is successful and that includes a possible bid to bring the Olympics here.

Ireland is competing against France and South Africa for the 2023 global tournament and Ross feels that success could open the door to even bigger sporting events coming to our shores.

Speaking to the Oireachtas Transport, Tourism and Sport Committee he said:

“Let’s think about the Olympics, sure. Now it’s a realistic prospect if we will build up these stadiums.

“The sky is the limit. I think we have the prospect of opening new channels and we should certainly be thinking that way.”

While the prospect of Ireland hosting an Olympic Games any time soon does seem ambitious, imagine being a young Irish athlete and hearing you could win gold in front of a vociferous home crowd.

Get it done, Minister Ross!
