Ireland’s biggest sporting names unite for powerful video on the importance of staying at home

Ireland’s biggest sporting names have come together for a video about the importance of staying apart as the country fights the Covid-19 outbreak.

One of the most difficult aspects of the pandemic is the fact that we all need to stay apart from our loved ones in order to keep them and ourselves safe. However, it’s something that we all have to do and that includes the sporting heroes who are used to doing their bit for the nation, albeit in much less serious circumstances.

A video has been shared this afternoon which features a host of people who are used to being referred to as ‘heroes’ acknowledge the efforts put in by the real heroes in all of this, the healthcare workers. The famous faces also drive home the importance of staying at home in these trying times and it’s all interspersed with some unforgettable sporting moments and a fairly soul-stirring soundtrack.

Some of Irish sport’s biggest names are there, including Brian O’Driscoll, Shane Lowry, Katie McCabe, Robbie Keane, Annalise Murphy, Seamus Coleman, Paul O’Connell, Colm Cooper and, well, we could go on and on really.  You can see who else turns up in the message to the “best fans in the world” below…

Full marks for getting the legendary Paul McGrath involved as well, it has to be said. The video has been shared on the social channels of many of those featured accompanied by the hashtag #UniteByStayingApart and while the message should be obvious already, having it driven home by people with such massive followings can’t do any harm.

As Shane Lowry says, “we travel the world supporting this great little country,” and the more we make the effort to stay home, the sooner we’ll all be doing that again.

Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to watch it again.
