Very sad news for the people of Killybegs, as Atlantic Treasures’ The Fish Stop, one of the only fish shops in the village, have announced that they are closing indefinitely due to a series of factors.
The decision was made as a result of “the current economic climate, ongoing increase in costs and lack of supply of fish” all of which have made their business “unsustainable.”
Their closure will be a huge loss to Killybegs, as is evident from the comments that flooded the announcement.
The O’Donnell family have been processing fish from the clear waters of the Atlantic for over 30 years and believe that fish can be utilised sustainably and safely to each and every customer. With hand crafted products, they smoke and marinade only the best quality fish at Atlantic Treasures, all of which could be traced from boat to basket.
The slow decline of the fish trade in Ireland has been documented for a while now – according to an article by Euro News at the beginning of 2023, Ireland is one of the worst affected countries by the Trade and Cooperation Agreement that was struck between the UK and the EU in 2021 post-Brexit.
The deal obliges European vessels to transfer to the UK part of their quota shares for certain fish stocks in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, which for Ireland means a 15% cut to its quotas by 2025, and a projected annual loss of €43 million.
The deal means many fishing families will eventually be pushed out of their own business, evident from what has happened to The Fish Stop in Killybegs.
