Leo Varadkar is currently on a trip to the USA but he came under fire at a private event in New York on Tuesday night where he said that he could relate to Donald Trump's view on the media and fake news.

He made the comments at an event that was closed-off to the media and the private event has pissed off a lot of journalist who followed him out to America.

Housing Minister, Eoghan Minister has said that Varadkar's comments were taken out of context but according to the Irish edition of The Times, Varadkar was heard saying that the media were more interested in covering gossip rather than relevant issues.

He specifically targeted, RTÉ's Prime Time Investigates and was heavily critical about the programme.

The National Union of Journalist have come out and said that Varadkar must clarify his comments fully while a spokesperson for Varadkar has added that the "conversation is now being quoted selectively and out of context".

Political Correspondent with TV3, Gavan Reilly was angered by the comments saying that:

"Every major Irish media outlet spent a four-figure sum following the Taoiseach to New York this week to cover exactly the sort of topics he’s complaining we ignore.

"To say this sort of thing behind our backs, at an event closed off to us, is really poor form."
