Man Fined For Sunbathing Naked During Irish Heatwave

Jen

A man has been fined for sunbathing naked in a communal area of an apartment complex in Longford.

Glen Wrather, who is originally from Leeds in England, appeared in a recent sitting of Longford district court.

According to Newstalk, the court heard how a woman had to pass him to hang out her clothes when she saw him sunbathing facing down, naked and became upset.

The defendant said that the reason he decided to strip and sunbath completely naked was because it was one of the hottest days of the year.

The incident happened on the 6th of July during the heatwave where the temperature hit 31°.

The woman contacted her husband who came home around 3:30 pm to find the 57-year-old sunbathing on his back.

Wrather’s solicitor, Brid Mimnagh, said her client was wearing swimming trunks which he had “inadvertently removed” and there was no one around at the time.

The court also heard that he was a naturist for 25 years.

Judge Seamus Hughes said he wasn’t very surprised at this incident and that this wasn’t Victorian Ireland.

However, he did tell Wrather that he had to appreciate he couldn’t just do whatever he wanted in public places and charged him with exposing himself.

He imposed a €200 fine that has to be paid within two months.

Don’t inadvertently remove your kit when sunbathing, You’ve been warned.
