Met Éireann: ‘Tonight will be the coldest night of the winter so far’

Rory Cashin

One part of country has already dropped to -5.9 degrees this past week, but tonight looks set to be even colder.

It was only yesterday that we reported the Irish national weather service had predicted snow to be falling for the first four days of this week, and today we bring the news that tonight will reportedly be the coldest night of the winter so far.

As of Tuesday morning, the coldest temperatures recorded in Ireland this winter were found in Roscommon on Saturday, January 2, when the temperatures dropped to -5.9 degrees, but it looks like tonight could drop even lower than that.

According to Met Éireann, tonight “looks set to be the coldest night of the winter so far. Temps will fall to -5 to -7°C in the west & north.”

Not that the east and south should expect to get away with a substantially warmer night, as it is forecast that “lows of -2 or -3°C will be widespread tonight”. Burrrrr!

Additionally, the AA Roadwatch have given an update on specifically icy roads this morning, stating the following at the time of writing:

“Icy conditions have been reported in parts of counties Longford and Kildare. Gardaí in Shannon, Co. Clare say extra care is needed on local and secondary routes. Stick to main routes where possible as they are more likely to have been gritted.”
