Micheál Martin has hastily deleted a tweet which said that he had ‘just finished a very positive call with US President Elect Joe Biden’.
The tweet was posted at 3.30pm this afternoon before being quickly deleted. It’s now being reported that a call between the two men has been arranged and that the tweet was posted in error.
It’s thought that if the phone call had taken place, Martin would have been one of the first world leaders to have spoken with Biden directly since his election victory last week. In the Dáil earlier today, the Taoiseach welcomed Biden’s election to the White House and said that “It’s fair to say, he’ll be the most Irish of US presidents since John F Kennedy”.
It was later reported that the Martin did indeed end up speaking to Biden and they spoke about the Good Friday Agreement as well as Mayo’s victory over Roscommon over the weekend…
Taoiseach spoke to Joe Biden for over 20 minutes this evening. Mr Biden restated his deep commitment to Good Friday Agreement. He said Ireland can be a bridge builder as part of his efforts to restore good relations between the US and EU. Knew too about Mayo’s win last Sunday

Mr. Biden has roots in the counties of Mayo and Louth, links of which he is clearly very proud. He is expected to take up his position as the 46th President of the United States in January.
