A new end date for Level 5 restrictions is being discussed by Government today

James Fenton

The Government will discuss extending current Level 5 restrictions until March 5 later today.

The current round of Level 5 restrictions are due to expire on January 31 but it now looks like that this will be extended until Friday March 5, making it almost a year since then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar first addressed the Irish public about restricting their movements on March 12, 2020.

As well as a new end-of-lockdown date, the Government will also discuss mandatory quarantine measures for some travellers into the country. A time period of 14 days is being considered for anyone who arrives without a PCR test or if they have travelled from South Africa or Brazil. Gardaí will also be engaging with people travelling to airports and ports and handing out fines to anyone undertaking non-essential air travel.

Cabinet will discuss the latest restrictions today before a formal announcement is made to the public.
