Tourists are being warned to avoid the Notre Dame area of Paris following a violent incident this afternoon.

It's understood that a man wielding a hammer attacked a police officer close to Notre Dame Cathedral and has now been shot.

While the French counter-terrorism unit has confirmed it is investigating the incident, it is not yet known whether the attack was an act of terrorism.

Police also took to Twitter in the last hour to confirm they were dealing with an incident and advised members of the public to steer clear.
