Penneys address rumours they’re reopening early

Rumours that Penneys would be reopening early began circulating this week after a fake message from the retailer was shared online.

Bearing the signature Penneys lettering across the top, the statement claimed that there was “good news for Penneys fans”, saying that the popular chain would reopen as early as June 8th. Coinciding with phase two of An Taoiseach’s roadmap for reopening the country, it seemed like it could potentially be true – sending Penneys fans into a frenzy at the prospect.

However, the chain has since confirmed that there is no truth to the message. According to phase two of the roadmap, small retail outlets will be allowed to reopen so long as numbers are controlled and proper social distancing measures are in place. Speaking to The Journal, a spokeswoman for the retailer said:

“We have not made any announcement about re-opening in Ireland and social media posts which are circulating with an opening date are false.

Nothing matters more to us than the health and wellbeing of our employees and customers. That is why we will only re-open our stores once we are convinced that it is safe and right to do so. We are closely following all safety advice from government, and will treat this as the minimum standard across all our stores.”

As it stands, the earliest that Penneys can reopen is June 29th though this remains subject to change.
