President Michael D Higgins has confirmed that his dog Síoda has passed away after a short illness.
Síoda’s passing was reported on Saturday morning after the news appeared in President Higgins’ email newsletter. In it, Higgins writes: “Sadly, we must report that Síoda has passed away after a short illness.’

Síoda became well-known to the Irish public throughout Higgins’ Presidency, along with her fellow Bernese Mountain Dog, Bród. They have often been seen welcoming political guests and other visitors to Áras an Uachtaráin and they even appeared a photograph marking President Higgins’ Christmas message last year.
Sad news for Michael D and his wife Sabina and we’re sure the Irish public will join us in offering our condolences on the loss of Síoda. May she rest in peace.
