The site had to close following a major rock-fall on the island.
Just in time for the good weather returning. Last month the Office of Public Works (OPW) had to close the site of Skellig Michael to tourists following rock-fall on the island that deemed it unsafe, according to
The Independent. While no one was injured, UNESCO closed the island to visitors immediately. It was set to reopen on Saturday 2nd July, but was delayed to Monday 4th due to bad weather.
The island, which was used as a set in
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and
The Last Jedi (2017), is a hotspot for tourists and visitors for its beautiful scenery.

According to
gov.ie, sea conditions were too dangerous for the OPW guide staff to travel across to Skellig Michael on Friday 1st in order to prepare for visitors returning to the island on Saturday. Instead they aimed to travel on Sunday 3rd for people returning on Monday 4th.
Provided sea conditions were improved, OPW staff were to, "
begin their preparations to welcome visitors back to the island."
We hope everything went smoothly and Skellig Michael will officially reopen for visitors this week.
