The great and the good of Irish and Liverpudlian football will descend on the Aviva Stadium next week to play a fundraising match for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust.

Sean, originally from Dublin, suffered serious injuries when he was attacked by Roma fans outside Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium, last April.

The fundraiser will feature a Liverpool Legends team including the likes of Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Ian Rush take on a Republic Of Ireland XI containing Damien Duff, Kevin Doyle and Andy Reid to name just a few. Jason McAteer, Robbie Keane, John Aldridge and Phil Babb, meanwhile, will play a half for each team having played for both throughout their careers.

Ahead of the match, McAteer paid a visit to St. Peter’s GAA in Dunboyne, Co. Meath, to get a sense of Sean’s contribution to the club and the local community as a whole. While there, he tried his hand at a bit of football and hurling and also got a chance to chat with Sean’s son Jack.

A video of the occasion was posted on Liverpool’s Twitter account and it really gives an indication of how much Sean is respected by club members as well as all he has done for St. Peter’s GAA.

The fundraising match for Sean takes place on Friday April 12 at the Aviva Stadium and tickets can be found here. Check out the video featuring Jason McAteer below.
