The O’Donovan Brothers Have Been Given The Cork Persons Of The Year Award

Liz

Gary and Paul O’Donovan from Skibbereen did us all proud last summer by winning Ireland’s first ever Olympic rowing medal and taking home silver.

Now the two talkative Skibbereen natives have another award to their name – Cork Persons Of The Year.

Gary received the award at the ceremony at the Rochestown Park Hotel on both their behalves as Paul was busy preparing for his physiotherapy exams in UCD.

The brothers became famous at home and abroad for their funny interviews, where they coined new catchphrases like “close your eyes and pull like a dog.”

RTÉ screened a documentary on the O’Donovans over Christmas called ‘Pull Like A Dog’.

Paul and Gary were even asked to appear on the Graham Norton show where Irishman Michael Fassbender said he’d heard all about their success, while Marion Cotillard couldn’t understand a word they said in their thick Cork accents.

However, they said the fame hadn’t gone to their heads, with Gary stating “We’re just two fellas down home in Skibbereen and they’d have no respect for anyone there.”
